For dance instructor Melissa George, choosing a career was
never a tough decision. She only had to find out
how to get there. "I have been dancing since I was 6 years
old,"Melissa said. "I've always wanted to do this
since I was a little girl."
She finally reached her goal in August when she opened
Absolute Dance at the Mellwood Arts & Entertainment
Center. She offers ballet, hip hop, jazz technique, creative
movement and tap dance. Melissa teaches all of the
classes herself. The studio also offers kempo, a form of
martial arts, and belly dancing.
Melissa offers classes for men, women and children of all
ages, and she has about 100 students from ages
3 to 68.
She said the dancing part came naturally. The harder part was
learning the business side. "Everything is totally
different from what you expect," she said. "It's definitely
been worthwhile though."
She said her location in the Mellwood Center is great because
the art can inspire her students. She also has room to
expand,
but for now, she's content with her space. |

Before opening her studio, she taught at two other studios and
coached the
North Oldham
High School dance team last year. She also
choreographed
five national-championship winning dance routines, as well as
a routine for the Miss Kentucky Pageant.
"Dance can be good exercise," Melissa said."It develops social
skills and large motor skills. For high school and middle
school students, it gives them an outlet to express themselves
in
a positive way. It's also a place to gather with friends
and do something that's fun."
Melissa was accepted as a member of the dance team at the
University of Kentucky in 2003 but turned it down to teach in
Louisville. She said her passion is helping others develop a
love for dance.
"I push them," she said. "I am not hard on my students, but I
want them to give everything that I know they have." |
